I Should Like

I should like to paint the dawning of another day,
To hear the dewdrops as they glisten on the fresh, green grass.
To smell the cry of a fledgling in the nest,
And stop to stroke the tiny fishes swimming in the pond.
I’d love to see the cry of a kestrel as it soars up into the sky,
And taste the softness of a newborn lion cub.
I would love to feel the sensation of flying with the birds,
Live underwater with the seashells,
Or be a rose giving my pollen to the bees.
All these are possible - but only in my dreams.
I should like to see what thoughts are in other people’s heads,
And know the secrets of the universe,
Or paint a world which isn’t yet created,
And know God’s feelings on life and death,
Feel the heartbeat of a loved one dead and gone,
In a world where no one ever had to mourn.
