Mothers’ Union notes

Christmas  2022 & New Year issue

October meeting

Approximately 20 Ladies met in Christ Church, Portsdown for a service during which Sarah, a new member, was welcomed into the branch.

Afterwards we moved to the Church Hall for a belated 85th Anniversary Tea. This had been delayed for two years due to COVID, so instead of 85 years it was in fact our 87th Anniversary.

We had tea and lots of cakes, plus a cake with “Happy Birthday” in candles.

There was a raffle and a stall of MU cards and merchandise.

November meeting

Our meeting began with prayers and a reading from St Matthews Gospel (The Sermon on the Mount).

After notices had been given out regarding previous meetings and future events members talked of their memories of Childhood Christmases.

Some were from Wartime, others whilst abroad, about stockings being hung up on Christmas Eve and decorating the tree, silver 3d pieces in the Christmas pud (Mothers making sure everyone’s slice had a coin in!), making paper chains, real candles on the tree. Some members still have decorations kept for many years. A nostalgic look back at Christmases past and a most enjoyable afternoon.

Christ Church, Portsdown, Advent Fayre

This was held on Saturday 26th November, in their large church hall.

As St George’s Ladies are now part of Christ Church’s Mothers’ Union branch I volunteered to help on the MU Stall there.

We sold a wide variety of items – everything had to be in the MU colours of yellow, white or blue, or a combination of these.

Mothers’ Union Christmas Party

Christ Church, Portsdown MU held its Christmas Tea Party on Tuesday 6th December. Ros, our Branch Leader welcomed guests from other MU branches and churches.

There were prayers, Christmas readings and poems, a Christmas themed table quiz and we sang carols before we had tea.

There were plates of sandwiches, savouries and cakes plus a helping of trifle for everyone. Teas and coffees were served to each table.

Donations totalling £132.20 were collected for “Literacy and Trauma in South Sudan”.
