St George’s News - Waterlooville’s Parish Magazine

The Website for St George’s Church, Waterlooville and its Parish Magazine St George’s News

After a hot but wet summer, our farmers are working hard to gather in their precious harvests. We pray it has been a good year for them with abundant harvests.

At St George's we are also preparing for harvest. The little apple trees which the Tuesday Toddler group, led by Dawn Hyett, helped us to plant, are now bearing their first fruit! Well, one is! These photos show the eating apple tree in front of the church has several apples which will soon be ripe and ready for picking!

The cooking apple tree planted in the area behind the church hall will hopefully be fruitful next year.

Our plan is that as these trees grow and bear greater amounts of fruit, the local community as well as our church community can benefit.

In the meantime, we thank God for these very special apples, our first harvest!

The grass area behind the hall has been allowed to grow unhindered throughout the summer. The children from Sunday school spread wild flower seeds and the result was delightful. The Land Management Plan which helps us to take the best care of St George's churchyard suggests this long grass should be cut at the end of August, another harvest for us. We hope this year to add some Yellow Rattle plants to this area as they are parasitic and weaken the existing grasses allowing the native wildflowers to flourish. The cut grass will go on our newly constructed compost areas and will provide nutritious compost for us to use next year.

All is well in our small corner of God's acre.
