At the time of writing this, Advent is only two weeks away. Here are a few suggestions for your Advent and Christmas readings.

Sleepers Wake: Getting serious about Climate Change by Nicholas Holtam

The problems of climate change are greater and more urgent than many of us realise. For while we may appreciate the challenges posed by the technical and political issues, the fundamental problem, as Nicholas Holtam argues, is spiritual. The words of scientist Gus Speth, former Director of the National Research Defence Council in the US, are highly pertinent: “I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, eco system collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years good science we could address these problems.  But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy – and to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation – and we scientists don’t know how to do that”. Offering a meditation about climate change and the environment that is brilliantly relevant to the season, this book focuses over 4 weeks on the topics of Now, Spirituality, Creation and Hope.

Sharing The Christmas Story:  From Reading to Living the Gospel by Sally Welch

What is the Christmas Story really about and how do we share it? Through each week in Advent, a different aspect of the Christmas story is examined: light, promise, mystery, love, peace and hope.  Within each week, the days are focused on the ways in which the Christmas story is shared: prophecies, journeys, new life, signs, poems, stories and conversations.  Each day offers a Bible passage, followed by a reflection and prayer activity.
